After the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, some of House Music’s biggest stars performed at Pacha NYC to help raise funds to ‘Help Heal NY’. The proceeds of the night went to help all those who suffered hardship from the disaster. Here’s Erick’s live set from the night with performance from Miss Shawnee Taylor.
Erick Morillo is one of the busiest DJs in the world, and that is only intensified in the summer months. He leaves his home in Miami and lives in Ibiza, using it as his base for his weekly residency at Pacha and central point for gigs around Europe, while still holding a residency in the United States. We, eventually, caught up with the man himself to get the low down.
1. In general how has Subliminal at Pacha been this year compared with other years?
Amazing! Pacha Ibiza is a very special place for me. This is my 13th season at Pacha and it seems that each year keeps getting better and better. We’ve had an amazing lineup this summer, guests have included Steve Angello, Diplo, Chuckie, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Dirty South, Azari & III, Sympho Nympho, Sneaky Sound System, Shawnee Taylor & our new female vocalist, Segarra. It’s definitely been a memorable summer so far for me and I can proudly say that Subliminal is still holding it’s own amongst the heavyweights. People know what they’re getting with a Subliminal night, a sound that’s always consistent and quality house music.

2. What has been your favourite party?
There were a number of standout parties but above all it was great to have Steve Angello back with us. There’s a lot of history with Steve and Subliminal so it was emotional to have him back.
3. Who were your favourite residents?
I’ve really enjoyed playing with Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano. They play really sexy, deep house sets with a young, fresh edge. There’s lots of percussion and drums in their sets, we get and understand each other, and I hope they’ll be part of the Subliminal family for a long while. And of course our other summer resident Chuckie. Again, he compliments the way I play and has worked very well alongside the Subliminal vibe this summer. And needless to say Sympho Nympho – my label mates Harry Romero & Jose Nunez – are always part of the Subliminal family. It’s been a long relationship and one that still holds ground 13 years on.
4. What tracks from the Subliminal 2012 compilation have you been playing the most?
All the tracks on the compilation feature in my sets but I particularly like these at the moment:
Denis The Menace & Syke ‘N’ Sugarstarr – World In Your Hands
T3ktone – Prelude
Yanik Coen – Throw Your Hands Up
5. How big of an anthem is World In Your Hands?
Seems like it’s certainly picking up heat. It’s got everything you want from an anthem.
6. What was it like paying at Ushuaia?
Ushuaia have been killing it this year. They’ve definitely filled the gap in the market and they’re smashing it, people love outdoor clubbing and this is what Ibiza used to be known for, daytime and outdoor clubbing. Doesn’t get much better than watching your favourite DJ while the sun goes down.
7. Did you discover anything new about Ibiza this year?
Other than new restaurants, beaches, bars that seem to be popping up all over the place, Ibiza this year has highlighted to me just how BIG dance music has become; and I see no end in sight. Whichever way you look at it, people from all walks of life wanna dance and let loose. Dance music is the green light to do so – without boundary and without judgment.
8. What was your recent trip to London like?
I have a certain soft spot for London so I always enjoy my trips to the UK. On the Friday night I was part of the LIVE House Party Broadcast on Channel 4 . That was a lot of fun and I got a great response from that. The following day Subliminal hosted a tent at SW4 festival in London. Aside from the occasional & torrential downpour of rain it was a great day. We had A-Trak, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Roger Sanchez, AN21 & Max to name a few, join us in our arena, we had a fantastic atmosphere in there all day. After that we went down the road with Sympho Nympho to Ministry of Sound and continued the party until gone 7am. Will definitely have to make more of an appearance in the UK in 2013.

9. What are you most looking forward to for the rest of the year?
I’m looking forward to finishing the Ibiza season and getting home to Miami for a bit of normality. The summer season is always very intense. There’s a lot of work in Europe, as well as regular long haul flights back to the US for residency dates. I played back to back for 4 plus months and you can often forget where you are not least who you are. I’m certainly taking my foot off the gas for the next few months to consider 2013 plans and spend a bit of time for me.
10. You have a boat and a jet, why don’t you have a helicopter?
Haha. It’s not quite as glamorous as it seems. I do not own a jet, I rent one by the hour in the summer months. Yes, it’s a luxury and I could fly without one, but for me to do as many gigs as I do it is not physically possible to get to so many places on commercial flights. I do have a boat in Ibiza. It’s a very fast fishing boat, so again not as glamorous as it sounds. It’s great to have to whizz across to Formentera for the day. I have a lot of fun with it. It’s a great way to relax and forget about work and business for a while. As for the helicopter….you’ve given me an idea….
Pacha Ibiza Closing Party 2012
Mixed by Erick Morillo and SYMPHO NYMPHO
July 31 – Subliminal Records
Digital mixed / DJ friendly unmixed and 2XCD
In celebration of his Subliminal Sessions residency at Pacha, Ibiza Erick Morillo presents Subliminal 2012 – a compilation of his favorite tracks to keep the summer party vibe going through to the fall. On Subliminal 2012 Erick Morillo and SYMPHO NYMPHO (the team of Erick Morillo, Harry “Choo Choo” Romero and Jose Nunez) guide you through an electronic musical spectrum from the underground to peak time floor fillers. This is the musical soundtrack to summer and beyond, for both DJs and music lovers.
Subliminal 2012 features top tracks from some of dance music’s most gifted producers. Tracks including Radio Slave feat. Danton Eeprom “Grindhouse (Nic Fanciulli Remix),” Daniel Steinberg “On The Train (Derrick Carter Remix)” and John Dahlback feat. Terri B “Flirt(Club Mix)” sit along side Subliminal standouts In The Screen feat. Rachel Starr “Keep On Dancin’ (Erick Morillo, Harry “Choo Choo” Romero, Jose Nunez Groove Mix),” Erick Morillo & Eddie Thoneick feat. Skin “If This Ain’t Love (DJ DLG Lazor Mix)” and Craig David feat. Erick Morillo “Get Drunk Up (SYMPHO NYMPHO Remix).” Subliminal 2012 is also packed with loads of exclusive material including T3KTONE “Prelude (Original Mix)” and “Sankadilla,” Eddie Amador & Harry “Choo Choo” Romero feat. Countre Black “We Are The Beautiful Ones (SYMPHO NYMPHO – NYMPHO MIX)” and Denis The Menace & Syke’N’Sugarstarr “World In Your Hands (Original Mix),” among others.
Erick Morillo holds the longest ever residency at Pacha Ibiza, now going into his 12th amazing year. His Subliminal Sessions parties have gone from strength to strength, with the last two seasons being the most highly attended, at the most VIP club on the island. As well as upfront fresh music that you will not hear anywhere else, there’s a proper party crowd in tow, and a list of VIPs as long as your arm, you just never know who you’re going to bump into you, from Diddy, Axwell, Tiësto, the list goes on. This season sees the return of Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello. The last time he played was the opening of the 2010 season, and rocked Pacha to it’s very foundations with an all night back to back set with Erick himself. Also, this year sees a residency with Mr. Dirty Dutch, Chuckie. After an amazing couple of years rocking all over the world, Chuckie will make many appearances at Subliminal Sessions this year, along with SYMPHO NYMPHO and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. Other guests include AN21 & Max Vangeli, Carl Kennedy, Dirty South, Norman Doray, Sneaky Sound System and Shawnee Taylor.
Erick Morillo needs very little introduction, a household name, a platinum selling artist, a producer who has topped the charts worldwide with the Real 2 Reel hit “I Like To Move It” and the owner of Subliminal Records. He’s produced under pseudonyms including Ministers De La Funk (along with Harry and Jose), RAW, Smooth Touch, RBM, Deep Soul, Club Ultimate, Li’l Mo Ying Yang, has remixed everyone from Whitney Houston to Basement Jaxx, from the Sneaker Pimps to Macy Gray and has collaborated with the likes of Puff Daddy. He’s big in the game to say the least.
It was while working on The Dronez material with Harry “Choo Choo” Romero and Jose Nunez, producers of percussive, funky tracks Cro-Magnon and Erectus – Subliminal Records – that the concept for Sympho Nympho was born. “We kinda soaked up all musical genres since the late 70’s between us,” says Jose. “We wanted to explore our diversity in a new dimension for us – popular music. It’s a radio friendly sound where we’ve morphed all our ideas and influences.” Harry adds, “With Sympho Nympho, we get to be more playful and express ourselves in a totally different way than before. It’s a new boundary for us, that we are having a blast discovering.”

DJ Chuckie is long time player in the game of House Music. He is the leader of the Dirty Dutch sound, and earned his respected House Music striped over many years of playing and producing quality music. He’s one of the resident DJs at Subliminal Session at Pacha Ibiza for the 2012 season. We caught up with him and picked his brains with a few interesting questions.
1. How does it feel to be the Subliminal resident at Pacha Ibiza?
It’s an amazing feeling. I have been a fan of Subliminal and Erick for a long time now and it is a real honour to be welcomed into their family. The fact it is in Ibiza makes it even better. Last year’s Subliminal events were of the chain, as was the opening party this year. It’s gonna be a great summer As I will get to develop my residency for Subliminal.
2. How long have you been a fan of Subliminal?
For a long time now. I would say I first got into them around 1999. They’ve had so many great people involved right from the start. Plus, their events are always amazing. They really know how to do it!!
3. What are the similarities between the Subliminal & Dirty Dutch sound?
Each sound has similarities and differences to each other but I guess I would say that something that ties them together is the party atmosphere that runs throughout both camps. Both want to make everybody have a lot of fun …. And both manage it every single time.
4. Apart from Ibiza, where else is your favourite place to DJ in the world?
I’m lucky to play in a lot of amazing places. Everybody knows that America is kicking off right now and that’s something I’m really enjoying. Vegas for example is just an incredible city. But I also love going to Brazil and other South American countries. They know how to party down there! Of course Amsterdam and the UK are always amazing places to play; the clubs are always great and the people are really clued up about music culture.
5. Is Dirty Dutch on a mission to take over the world?
We don’t want to take over the world, we just want to share all this amazing music that we are a part of with the rest of the world. Over the years we have met so many amazing artists and come across so much incredible music that really, it is our duty to get this out there for the entire world to hear.
6. How many hats do you have?
Haha. Why? Have you found one? I have a lot of hats. But it seems that I am also losing them at about the same rate as I pick them up. I have now mastered the art of a stage dive whilst keeping the hat on so will hopefully be able to hang onto a few that bit longer.
7. Vinyl, CDs or USB?
They are all great. They all have benefits and they have things that are not as good, you just have to weight them up for you personally. As I travel so much, USB sticks are great for me because it allows me to take all my music away with me easily. So I only use USBs, that’s it! Dance music always moves with the times and we’ve got this great technology right in the palm of our hands ….. let’s use it. We’ve gotta keep evolving people!
8. What producers do you rate right now- who’s killing it?
Betatraxx and Gregori Klosman are two guys that are completely killing it for me right now. Every time I see them play they do something different, and each time it blows me away.
9. What piece of advice would you give to someone going to Ibiza clubbing for the first time?
Get your sleep in before you come because it’s unlikely you’ll get any whilst you here. Oh and also, make sure you check out Subliminal at Pacha!!!!
