CHUCKIE: Resident DJ at Subliminal Sessions, Pacha Ibiza

DJ Chuckie is long time player in the game of House Music. He is the leader of the Dirty Dutch sound, and earned his respected House Music striped over many years of playing and producing quality music. He’s one of the resident DJs at Subliminal Session at Pacha Ibiza for the 2012 season. We caught up with him and picked his brains with a few interesting questions.

1. How does it feel to be the Subliminal resident at Pacha Ibiza?

It’s an amazing feeling. I have been a fan of Subliminal and Erick for a long time now and it is a real honour to be welcomed into their family. The fact it is in Ibiza makes it even better. Last year’s Subliminal events were of the chain, as was the opening party this year. It’s gonna be a great summer As I will get to develop my residency for Subliminal.

2. How long have you been a fan of Subliminal?

For a long time now. I would say I first got into them around 1999. They’ve had so many great people involved right from the start. Plus, their events are always amazing. They really know how to do it!!

3. What are the similarities between the Subliminal & Dirty Dutch sound?

Each sound has similarities and differences to each other but I guess I would say that something that ties them together is the party atmosphere that runs throughout both camps. Both want to make everybody have a lot of fun …. And both manage it every single time.

4. Apart from Ibiza, where else is your favourite place to DJ in the world?

I’m lucky to play in a lot of amazing places. Everybody knows that America is kicking off right now and that’s something I’m really enjoying. Vegas for example is just an incredible city. But I also love going to Brazil and other South American countries. They know how to party down there! Of course Amsterdam and the UK are always amazing places to play; the clubs are always great and the people are really clued up about music culture.

5. Is Dirty Dutch on a mission to take over the world?

We don’t want to take over the world, we just want to share all this amazing music that we are a part of with the rest of the world. Over the years we have met so many amazing artists and come across so much incredible music that really, it is our duty to get this out there for the entire world to hear.

6. How many hats do you have?

Haha. Why? Have you found one? I have a lot of hats. But it seems that I am also losing them at about the same rate as I pick them up. I have now mastered the art of a stage dive whilst keeping the hat on so will hopefully be able to hang onto a few that bit longer.

7. Vinyl, CDs or USB?

They are all great. They all have benefits and they have things that are not as good, you just have to weight them up for you personally. As I travel so much, USB sticks are great for me because it allows me to take all my music away with me easily. So I only use USBs, that’s it! Dance music always moves with the times and we’ve got this great technology right in the palm of our hands ….. let’s use it. We’ve gotta keep evolving people!

8. What producers do you rate right now- who’s killing it?

Betatraxx and Gregori Klosman are two guys that are completely killing it for me right now. Every time I see them play they do something different, and each time it blows me away.

9. What piece of advice would you give to someone going to Ibiza clubbing for the first time?

Get your sleep in before you come because it’s unlikely you’ll get any whilst you here. Oh and also, make sure you check out Subliminal at Pacha!!!!

Erick Morillo Tour Diary April 2012

06 Apr 2012 – Pacha, NYC

This was our first time back to Pacha this New Year. No better way to make a return than to celebrate Mr Erick Morillo’s birthday bash. You can’t even imagine how many people were texting me for guest list. This was a celebration you did not want to miss. I walked into the DJ booth to find our very own Harry Choo Choo Romero ripping the decks up. Playing a variety of tech house. Next up birthday boy himself Erick Morillo but tonight Erick had a special guest for everyone! Wyclef from the Fugees was performing the hit new single with Erick “Miss Molly”! The crowd went into frenzy and Wyclef is such a showman, giving the crowd a bit of freestyle off his dome. What an amazing performance from a pioneer of hip-hop. The maestro himself, Erick, played till 8:30am capping off the night. Special thanks to all that showed up and gave the birthday boy a night to reminder.

12 Apr 2012 – Lavo, NYC

We made our way back to NYC. Twice in less than a week must mean we had a big celebration to attend. Jason Straus was celebrating his birthday, and who better to set this party off, than yours truly, Erick Morillo. One can say Jason Straus has the Midas touch when it comes to nightlife. I arrived early to avoid the chaos outside and sure enough it was mayhem! The who’s who of nightlife was trying to get into this Gala of event. So many came to wish Jason happy birthday, Nikki Hilton, Noah T, Rob Fernandez, Lou B and my boy Josh Wonders. Erick even sang his own rendition of Happy birthday to Jason. It was not pretty but he sure can play music! Special thanks to everyone that showed up!

13 Apr 2012 – MID, Chicago Il

Early morning pickups are the worst but the show must go on. We made our way over to the Midwest. There’s been a lot of hype about MID, so I could not wait to see what all the noise is about. I walked into this two level venue and I was blown away! Big sound and the room packed with some serious house heads. Erick was escorted thru the back alley to avoid the chaos outside. He walked into the booth and this crowd went nutz! Erick started his set with a bang! He just knows how to tell a story. This room got really hot in a minute. No worries Erick pulled out his shiny new Co2 gun, and he cooled them off, for a minute. All good things must come to an end. One thing is for sure Chicago has it going on. See you all June 30th at the Wave Form Festival.

14 Apr 2012 – Marquee, Las Vegas

We made our way further west. Marquee has become my second home. One good reason, Erick has a monthly residency there. I arrive a bit earlier than normal, to find myself in a room packed by 11pm. Tonight we were celebrating the birthday of Jason Straus. If you don’t know who he is, he is the owner of Tao, Marquee and Lavo. So this place was going to be crazy tonight. Erick was rushed into the DJ booth, and he just started spraying the crowd with co2, then started killing them slowly with some tracks from Sympho Nympho, which is the brainchild of Erick Morillo. Harry Choo Choo Romero and Jose Nunez. I have to admit, Las Vegas has some of sexiest women in America! What an amazing night and the energy was thru the roof! Like to give a big shout out to Jason Straus and the entire team over at Marquee! See you all in June!

19 Apr 2012 – Republiq, Manila Philippines

The mobile company Nokia called on Erick Morillo, to launch there new Lumia phone. So we made our way from Miami – Los Angeles – Hong Kong – Philippines. This was one of my longest journeys to date! I was escorted into the venue and was amazed, so many people were eager to hear Erick play. This place is sick, it had a huge LED wall, and an amazing co2 jet production. Erick walked into the booth and just smacked this place up and down! I heard the CFO’s of Nokia were dancing their butts off. So many VIPs were in the house, celebrating the launch of their sexy new phone! All I have to say this crowd was in trance. This was Erick’s first time in Manila but it will not be his last! Thank you Nokia and of course Republiq and all that showed up.

29 Apr 2012 – Amnesia, Miami

We could just not help ourselves, to play one last time here in Miami. You can say this weekend was a very wet one, to say the least, it poured rain all weekend. So by Sunday everyone had cabin fever! The club was packed and ready for an epic evening! Erick walked over and took the decks, starting with a sexy house set for the ladies. Erick played some new edits from Sympho Nympho, and the crowd went insane and is proving the boys (Erick Morillo, Harry Romero and Jose Nunez) are going to have a big year! Special thanks to Dave Grutman, the staff at Liv and of course all of you, the fans! Bon voyage Miami! See you in Ibiza may 30th 2012.

Erick Morillo’s highlights of 2011 (..with an eye on 2012)

NYE Marquee

2011 started with a big BANG this year! It was the opening of the brand new day & night super club Marquee in Las Vegas. Anyone who’s been here will know what I’m talking about. This was a totally off the wall party, Erick was chatting with Jennifer Lopez just before his set, while Jay-Z was freestyling on the mic bigging up Coldplay, who also performed. When Erick was getting right down to party time in his set, Diddy came down to the booth to party too. This was an a-list star-studded night to ring in 2011.

Brazil Tour

Only a matter of weeks after the mammoth Marquee party it was the first Brazilian tour of 2011. Five cities in four days with the private jet on stand-by to take the crew from city to city. The tour started in sunny Rio at exclusive venue the Jockey Club. There were so many hot Brazilian women there with such a good vibe, it was hard for the crew to pull themselves away, but they had to leave as the jet was waiting to fly to party number two on day one, at Brasilia. This was a much smaller club, nevertheless, the people had just as much passion and energy. Erick says “Wow, what an awesome night, I’m shattered and need to get some rest before Recife tomorrow.” It was raining in Recife but that didn’t stop play. Recife partied till the sun came up, and it all happened in a boat yard! Such a cool venue. Next up was a trip the humid jungle-like atmosphere of Florianopolis and the huge Creamfields festival. The energy here was insane! There must have been sixty thousand people all going mental to Erick’s set. Steve Angello’s brother AN21 was in town and stopped by to get down. This was a truly awesome gig. The final gig of the tour was in Sao Paulo at new club Cafe de la Musique. This is where the beautiful people of Sao Paulo come to party. However, don’t just take our word for it, check the video, you won’t be disappointed.

Miami – Birthday party @ LIV & Ultra Music Festival

Birthday parties are always special, and Erick’s 40th was something very special. To DJ all night on your own birthday shows your passion for the music and bringing the party to the people. The guest list looked more like it belonged to the Grammys with A Listers like Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, Diddy, Craig David, Naomi Campbell, Caprice and Felix da Housecat amongst others turning up. Will, Diddy and Craig all took to the mic and rapped and sang to the music. Craig David sang his collaboration track with Erick ‘Fly Away’, LIV didn’t know what hit them. There was even a giant cake brought to the middle of the dance floor and out popped a beautiful woman wearing a tiara and happy birthday sash. The floor was full till daybreak! Erick rocked it!

The party did not stop there! The very next day Erick would rock out in front 50,000 people at the Ultra Music Festival. There was a live element added to the show with Shawnee Taylor, Rachel Starr and Jessica Sutta formerly of The Pussycat Dolls all singing live. The Ultra crowd were loving it. Not only that, Diddy decided to crash the party and take to the stage for an impromptu performance of gigantic proportions! The crowd were going wild! Erick played a rocking super tight set with bomb after bomb, but Diddy stole the show here. Erick was only too glad to share the stage with his superstar buddy.

Ibiza 2011 @ Pacha

Many more gigs later and the summer descends before there’s hardly time to catch a breath. The Ibiza parties at Pacha were even busier than 2010! Chuckie opened with Erick and it was the place to play for the hardcore clubbers and househeads. The people who are serious about their music and clubbing make it out for the opening parties. Chuckie plays a more housey set than his usual progressive/electro vibe then Erick follows and literally blows the roof off. One of the highlights of the season for Erick was having New York DJ legend and the DJs DJ, Danny Tenaglia. It was the first time Danny had played at a Subliminal night at Pacha and boy did he bring his super cool underground New York flavour to the club, the dance floor was jam packed right to the end of the night!, always the sign of a great DJ to keep the floor busy till the lights come up. Erick let Danny close the night on this historic occasion. The closing party was just as busy as the opening party, Shawnee Taylor sung an unbelievable PA and she rightly was the star of the show. Erick and Harry Choo Choo also played a blinder which was a fitting conclusion to a super successful season on the white isle. Again, don’t take our word for it, we have video evidence.

Production

As well as all the amazing parties and festivals throughout 2011 Erick has been very busy in the studio too. I know what you’re thinking, where does he get the time right? One of the highlights this year is new project SYMPHO NYMPHO, a coming together of house production legends Erick, Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero and Jose Nunez. If that wasn’t enough they have an unbelievable line-up of guest performers on their album dropping March 2012. It features Wyclef Jean, Segarra, Pitbull, Busta Rhymes, Jessica Sutta and Dizzee Rascal. It’s packed with a ton of stars! Erick is very very excited about this album, he says “This is an amazing new sound, it’s a sound for all the kids out there, they are gonna freak when they hear this.” To get a taste of the SYMPHO NYMPHO sound check out this great new podcast featuring 48 mins of pure dance power!

February sees hot new single with UK singing star Alexandra Burke called’ Elephant’ and Erick teams up with Eddie Thoneick again with new track ‘If This Ain’t Love’ featuring Skin of Skunk Anansie. Shawnee Taylor has a new single called ‘Colours’ coming in 2012, Erick says, “This is a departure for Shawnee. It’s a whole new sound and people are really going to be blown away it. You’re going to hear Shawnee like you’ve never heard her before.” So a lot to look forward to then.

Dance music blows up in the US of A!

These new releases coincide with the massive dance movement in America right now. Historically, U.S. DJs have mostly travelled to Europe to play DJ gigs. Their careers have mostly been built on the other side of the pond. However, now it’s the European DJs coming to America for regular slots like Tiesto, Steve Angello and Swedish House Mafia . The Swedes recently turned the iconic Madison Square Gardens into a nightclub, and even followed it up with a sell-out after party at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC. This is unheard of in recent times and will set a precedent for other acts to follow. Even the Canadians like Deadmau5 are selling out huge shows five nights in a row. Kaskade is now producing more progressive music and taking Vegas by storm. Erick says “these are really exciting times for dance music in America. 2012 is going to be even bigger than 2011. What the Swedes have done at MSG, and festivals like Ultra, EDC and Burning Man, people in America are going dance music crazy! It feels great. It’s so exciting.”

Personal Life – A time to chill

After working so hard through 2011 Erick is going to take a well-deserved week vacation in the sunshine paradise of Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. It would be rude to go alone, so he’s taking no less than nineteen Morillo’s with him! “I’m taking my whole family away with me for Christmas. There will be nineteen Morillo’s on the scene, and it’s going to be like the Olympics every day, hahaha”. Well it’s hats off and swimming shorts on for Erick as we wish him well for the holiday period. And if what we’ve heard thus far about 2012 is anything to go by, 2012 is going to be even bigger than 2011.

Happy holidays from Erick, SYMPHO NYMPHO and all at Subliminal Records.
